The Texas Foundation for Archaeological & Historical Research
About TFAHR
Since 1986 TFAHR has been providing opportunities
for Texas teachers and students to participate in
archaeological excavations abroad.
Through the generosity of numerous individuals and
organizations, TFAHR has been able to sponsor digs
in Israel, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, and
France. TFAHR has prepared publications for all
excavated sites, which feature photos, site plans and
pottery drawings; teachers involved in the projects
have contributed articles and drawings to these
publications, some of which are now being used as
archaeology texts in the countries where we have
worked. Important finds from the sites are on display
in local and national museums.
In addition to the Foundation’s archaeological
excavations, the Foundation has an ongoing Photo
Archive Project. The aim of the photo archive project is
to gather together in one place images of famous and
historically important cities, archaeological sites,
buildings, paintings, ceramics and statues. To
achieve this aim the Foundation has sponsored
historical study and photographic field trips overseas
for teachers. So far, teachers have been sent to
Spain, Turkey, Italy, France, and Greece. A new
resource for teacher and students is the TFAHR
Historic Images series, video slide shows created

Having gained invaluable experiences on TFAHR projects, many of the participating teachers
bring ideas back to their classrooms to make history and science come alive. One such project is
the "Tell Ubivis" mock dig, where TFAHR archaeologists and volunteers, in conjunction with a
school, build an excavation site on campus and direct its excavation by students. A report on the
Tell Ubivis Project can be found in the new TFAHR Publication (September 2007).
