Session I: Ancient Bilazora, Sveti Nikole. June 2 - July 4, 2008.
TFAHR will participate for the first time in the excavations of ancient Bilazora, which some believe
is the capital of the Paionian people. This site, located in the Ovce Pole valley, has monumental
remains dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. Excavations were conducted in the 1980s
and 1990s, and in 2000. Among the structures uncovered so far are a large water reservoir of
opus quadratum blocks, and a substantial defensive wall.
Sveti Nikole is located approximately 32 km north-east of Veles, on the road between Stip and
Kumanovo. We will stay at a motel in Sveti Nikole; the excavation site is located some 4 km
southwest of the town.
Periods of Occupation of the Site: 6th - 3rd century BC.
Project Directors:
TFAHR: Dr. William J. Neidinger and Eulah M. Matthews
People's Museum of Sveti Nikole: Mr. Aleksandar Danev
Expert Consultant: Mr. Boban Husenovski, Museum of Gevgelija
Session II: Vardarski Rid, Gevgelija. July 7 - July 30, 2008.
The 2008 TFAHR Archaeological Expedition will again investigate the site of Vardarski Rid in the
Vardar (Axios) River Valley, building upon our work there in 1995, 1996 and 2007. This project
is organized by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ss. Cyril & Methodius, Skopje, and the
Museum of Gevgelija.
The objective of the project is to illuminate the history and cultural milieu of the lower Vardar
Valley, a critical region in the ancient kingdom of Macedonia.
Periods of Occupation of the Site: Iron Age to Roman Imperial (7th century BC – 1st century
AD)
Project Directors:
TFAHR: Dr. William J. Neidinger and Eulah M. Matthews
Museum of Gevgelija: Mr. Emil Slamkov
Additional Information for Sessions I and II.
Room and Board Arrangements: TFAHR will provide accommodations in a nearby motel
(double or triple occupancy with private bath), and meals during the work-week at no cost to the
volunteers. Volunteers pay for their own beverages at all meals. Weekend expenses are the
responsibility of the volunteers.
Costs: Volunteers must make their own way to Sveti Nikole or Gevgelija.
Academic Credit: No academic credit will be offered.
