TFAHR Macedonia Expedition 2008
What To Bring
Dig Participants -
This page is a work in progress -
please check back frequently for
updated information.
Shoes.  Close-toed shoes for digging, not sandals.  Sneakers / trainers are OK, as are work boots.  But
don’t feel like you have to buy something new.  Shower shoes (flip-flops) are recommended for the
bathroom.
Towel.
Water bottle.  Or you can buy big bottles of water in the market and re-use them a few times.
Sunscreen.
Weekend clothes.
Modest clothes in case of visits to monasteries or mosques.  That means arms and
legs need to be covered, and women’s heads.  Some monasteries might require a skirt for women
(below the knee).  Outside of religious establishments, people in Macedonia do not dress particularly
modestly; you can wear whatever you would normally wear in North America or western Europe.
Swim-suit.  There is no swimming pool at our motel, but there may be opportunities to swim on the
weekend.
Jacket or sweater.
Any prescription or over-the-counter medicines you might need.
Toilet articles.
Soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, etc. are available in the shops in town if
you need to replace something.  The motel will probably not provide soap or shampoo.
Wash cloth, sink plug and hair dryer, if you think you will want them.  These will not be provided by
the motel.
Ear plugs.  There may be weddings with music late into the night at the motel.
Mosquito repellent, or protective clothing to wear at night.
Adapters for any electrical devices you bring.  Both Macedonia and Greece follow the European
standard, 220V to 240V / 50Hz to 60 Hz.  You will need a voltage converter for any devices that do not
follow this standard.  You will also need the standard two-prong plug adapter that is used in continental
Europe.
Alarm clock.
Rain gear – umbrella or raincoat.
Books.  If you want to read in your spare time, it is best to bring something from home.  You may find
books or magazines in English or other languages on the weekends, but they are very expensive in
Macedonia.

NOTE ON YOUR VALUABLES:  Although there will be locks on your motel room doors, we don’t
recommend you leave any valuables in the room.  TFAHR will not be responsible for lost or stolen
items.  We recommend you keep things like your passport, money, and camera with you.

OTHER RECOMMENDED ITEMS:

Work clothes.  Shorts and t-shirts are OK; bring your oldest
clothes!  There may be brush or brambles when we open new
areas; you will want to wear long pants and long sleeves on those
days.  In early June, some mornings and evenings may be cool
enough for a light jacket or sweatshirt.  The summer of 2007 saw
some extreme heat (higher than 40 degrees C), so be prepared
for anything.
