Ancient Bylazora, Sveti Nikole.  June 1 - July 24, 2009.

In June 2009 the TFAHR will return to Sveti Nikole to excavate the site of Ancient Bylazora,
continuing the work begun in 2008.  Bylazora was the fabled capital city of the Paionians.  The
site, located in the Ovce Pole valley, has monumental remains dating from the sixth to the third
century B.C.  Excavations were conducted in the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2000.  Among the
structures uncovered during these excavations were a large subterranean opus quadratum
building, and a substantial defensive wall.

TFAHR’s work in 2008 concentrated mainly in Sector 3 of the acropolis, where we uncovered an
extensive stretch of the defensive wall, and a long and wide paved ramp leading to an as yet
unexcavated structure.  In 2009 we will resume work on the acropolis to determine what other
buildings were associated with the defensive wall and ramp, and to get a better idea of the
    chronology of these structures.

For further information about the site of Bylazora and TFAHR's recent excavations, download the
    Bylazora 2008 Report .

Periods of Occupation of the Site:  6th - 3rd century BC.

    Project Directors:
TFAHR:  Dr. William J. Neidinger and Eulah M. Matthews
People's Museum of Sveti Nikole:  Mr. Aleksandar Danev

Additional Information.

Room and Board Arrangements:  TFAHR will provide accommodations in a nearby motel
(double or triple occupancy with private bath), and meals during the work-week at no cost to the
volunteers.  Volunteers pay for their own beverages at all meals.  Weekend expenses are the
    responsibility of the volunteers.

Costs:  Volunteers must make their own way to Sveti Nikole.

Academic Credit:  No academic credit will be offered.
