Ancient Bylazora, Sveti Nikole. June 7 - July 30, 2010.
In June 2010 TFAHR will return to Sveti Nikole to excavate the site of Ancient Bylazora,
continuing the work from the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Bylazora was the fabled capital city of the
Paionians. The site, located in the Ovce Pole valley, has monumental remains dating from the
sixth to the third century B.C. Excavations were conducted in the 1980s and 1990s, and in
2000. Among the structures uncovered during these excavations were a large subterranean
opus quadratum building, and a substantial defensive wall.
TFAHR’s work in 2008 and 2009 concentrated mainly in Sector 3 of the acropolis, where we
uncovered an extensive stretch of the defensive wall, and a long and wide paved ramp flanked
by public buildings. In 2010 we will resume work on the acropolis to determine what other
buildings were associated with the defensive wall and ramp, and to get a better idea of the
chronology of these structures.
